Gareth is a five year old boy who likes Star Wars, super heroes, pounding on drums, sleeping in tents, and pedaling his trike for hours. In other words, he’s into relatively typical kid stuff. The thing that makes Gareth a little different is that he has cerebral palsy. As a result, he is unable to stand, walk, or run on his own. Most of his fun has to be facilitated by other adults and kids. Except riding a trike. Through his school, he has access to an adapted tricycle that provides him with support for his body and straps his arms and feet into place to aid his control. When mounted on this trike, Gareth achieves a touch more independence (he still needs help steering) and is able to propel himself around the school bike path.
Every day the weather is good, he can be found out on his trike pedaling his way up and down the path, usually for at least an hour a day. He has shown a real love of biking, one that we, his family, friends, teachers, and therapists, believed should be encouraged and expanded.
However, his particular physical limitations and needs dictated that not just any bike would work. A bike for Gareth had to provide support for his body while allowing him to at least provide pedal power. It also had to accommodate his medical equipment. Most important of all, however, is that it had to let him be out front where he could really feel the wind in his face.
That’s why we zeroed in on the Hase Pino.
